Ohio to Erie Trail – 50W Brewing to Streetside Brewery (and back)

On a warm afternoon in April, we decided to explore a new part of the Little Miami Science Trail. We parked our car at 50West Brewing and rode south.

The trail is well marked and easy to follow. There are parts that are not shaded, so keep that in mind when planning this trip, maybe spring or early fall when it is not so humid and the sun is a little less brutal, or late afternoon.

It was about 5 miles from 50W to Lunken Airport. Lunken Airport is a public airport 3 miles east of downtown Cincinnati. It is owned by the city of Cincinnati and serves private aircraft and the fleets of local corporations. The property also contains public recreation areas. There is a 5 mile paved trail around the airport. Once we hit Lunken, we rode west along the north side of the trail, then turned south and followed the trail to almost the SW corner, there we turned west onto a side street. We rode just a few blocks to get to Streetside Brewing. You are riding on the street with car traffic for several blocks, so make sure you are comfortable with this before planning this trip. The traffic this particular day was not super heavy, but the streets are narrow and it did feel tight when a car was passing us. (I’m also a nervous street rider)

Streetside Brewery: “Rooted in Cincinnati’s oldest neighborhood, we strive to bring together a down to earth experience and a selection of exceptional craft beer that’s as diverse as the community we serve.” The brewery is tucked into a local neighborhood, Columbia Tusculum. They had a food truck and an open wall looking out on the street. Bike racks are available in front of the building. The open air atmosphere was nice as we enjoyed our refreshing pints this warm spring day. I also purchased some beer to go, utilizing my Crowler Caddie to keep it cold on my bike for transportation home.

We retraced our path to complete the ride. Briefly we thought about visiting Big Ash Brewing on the way back, on the map it looks like a short street ride off the trail. But once we got to the jumping off point, the road looked a bit more intimidating and not so bike friendly, so we opted out. We will plan on visiting this brewery via car at a later date. Do your research if you think you want to add this to your ride.

We ended our ride at 50West Brewing, with a pint and burger. This brewery is always a fun environment. There are so many things to do here, sand volleyball, pickle ball, curling in the winter. Check out their website for more information. It’s always very busy on the weekends, so we like to hit it during the week if possible. Good burgers and shakes. Great beer. Family and pet friendly. Highly recommend you check it out if you are in the area.
